“Coroner to the Stars”

Directed by Ben Hethcoat and Keita Ideno, “Coroner to the Stars” is a fascinating and disturbing documentary about Dr. Thomas Noguchi. Even if you’ve heard his name before, chances are you don’t know just how much Noguchi’s work changed forensic science (or how often it put him in the middle of some of America’s biggest true crime controversies).

The film follows Noguchi’s incredible journey from Japanese immigrant to Los Angeles County’s Chief Medical Examiner and Coroner. Along the way, he became known for investigating the deaths of cultural icons like Marilyn Monroe, Robert F. Kennedy, Sharon Tate, Natalie Wood, and John Belushi. Those cases made headlines around the world, but the documentary never treats them like tabloid entertainment.

That’s what I appreciated most about the film. Instead of turning these tragedies into another sensational true crime story, the film focuses on the science, the evidence, and Noguchi’s determination to let the facts speak for themselves. It also shows how his innovative autopsy techniques helped bring forensic pathology into the mainstream, changing the way death investigations were conducted and how the public viewed them. Hethcoat and Ideno compile plenty of interviews and vintage media coverage of these celebrity deaths, court hearings, and the aftermath, and it’s all very interesting to watch.

The documentary handles the controversies with surprising fairness. It doesn’t pretend Noguchi’s conclusions were universally accepted, and it gives plenty of space to the people who challenged his findings. Whether the criticism came from politicians, fellow officials, or powerful Hollywood figures like Frank Sinatra, the film lays everything out and lets you decide what to think. That balanced approach makes the story even more compelling.

What really stays with you, though, is Noguchi himself. He comes across as someone who genuinely believed the truth mattered more than public opinion, even when standing by his findings made him a target. His career wasn’t just about performing autopsies, but it was about defending science in situations where emotions, politics, and celebrity often threatened to overshadow the facts.

If you’re a fan of true crime, there’s plenty here to keep you interested. But “Coroner to the Stars” is really about much more than famous deaths. It’s an engaging look at one man’s remarkable career, the evolution of forensic science, and the personal cost of refusing to back down when the evidence points somewhere uncomfortable. It’s sometimes unsettling, often fascinating, and well worth watching.
