“Ponyboi”

In what reminds me of a mash-up of the classic film “Midnight Cowboy” and the modern television series “The Deuce” (with a tinge of John Waters’ sensibilities thrown in for good measure), there is a lot to like about director Esteban Arango’s “Ponyboi,” a campy, visual feast that’s dripping in neon. The style and vibe of this genre-blending LGBTQ+ film features likeable characters, refreshingly blunt sex scenes, and one hell of a wild, intense ride through New Jersey’s underbelly.

It’s Valentine’s Day in Jersey, and intersex worker Ponyboi (River Gallo) becomes involved in a drug deal that goes sideways. With the mob hot on the trail, Ponyboi is forced to confront an uncomfortable past if there’s any hope left of getting through the night.

Beneath the slick visuals and action is a sincere story about self-discovery, identity, acceptance and redemption. The multi-talented Gallo (who also wrote the screenplay and produced the film) gives an electrifying performance in the lead role. They embrace Ponyboi with a spirited energy that lends just the right amount of kitsch. Gallo and Arango work incredibly well together, and I hope the pair collaborate on more projects in the future.

With its sensibilities and unconventional style, “Ponyboi” practically screams that it is an independent film. This means it’s far off the mainstream grid, but artsy-minded audiences are going to love it.
