“Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story”

From the stunning visual imagery and gorgeous nature photography to its story of human kindness and healing, “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story” is an emotional powerhouse of a documentary. Director Charlie Hamilton-James does everything right here, creating a wonderful portrait of the heartwarming connection between humans and nature, and the reciprocal ability of each to heal all wounds.

Billy, his wife Susan, and their devoted canine companion Jade lead a quiet life on a jetty in the remote Scottish Islands of Shetland. One day, a desperate and starving wild otter washes up on their dock. Determined to save the helpless creature, Billy forms a unique bond with the orphaned otter, whom he names Molly. The film documents their relationship.

You’d have to have a heart of stone not to be touched by this film. Even Billy himself, who had a yearning for something missing in his life, found a new purpose in his role as Molly’s nurturer. Yes, he does go a little too far in ignoring his own family (poor Jade, as Hamilton-James makes a point to show the loyal dog always by Billy’s side, begging for attention and playtime), but it’s understandable that sometimes we tend to get so obsessed with other projects that we forget the love and support that’s right there, staring us in the face.

The compassion and devotion displayed by Billy and Susan to Molly is commendable, and the pair have an admirable respect for Mother Nature and her living creatures. These are gracious and generous people with massive hearts, and their actions saved the life of a needy animal.

With its charming and cheery subjects, uplifting story, emotive, string-heavy score, impressive nature photography, and glimpses of natural otter behavior, “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story” captures beautiful scenery and moments of kindness. What a tender reminder that all is never lost, because all you really need is a little bit of love.
