“The Addams Family 2”

I love the “The Addams Family” characters as well as the visual style of the animated movies, but “The Addams Family 2” doesn’t offer much more to like. It’s not total garbage, but it’s lazy and forgettable in all the worst ways. The story isn’t terrible and the voice talent is acceptable, but the low-brow toilet humor and mindless filler makes this one feel like another manufactured babysitter from the animation factory.

Morticia (voice of Charlize Theron) and Gomez (voice of Oscar Isaac) are sad that their kids are growing up. Determined to keep their bond strong, mom and dad decide to haul Wednesday (voice of Chloë Grace Moretz), Pugsley (voice of Javon Walton) and Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) in their camper and travel across the country on a forced family vacation. They traverse America and get themselves into various fish-out-of-water situations, most of which are dreadfully dull. There are a few comedic bright spots early on, but the writers (there are six writing credits for this screenplay) run out of material quickly.

Even the actors don’t seem to want to be here, with the exception of Kroll. He’s the perfect Uncle Fester, and even brings his own brand of humor to the role. The rest of the cast lend indifference to an already weak script.

Maybe fans thirsty for nostalgia will find more to enjoy about “The Addams Family 2” than most, but I think this one has a dim future as nothing more than a movie that’s put on in the background to shut kids up.
