It’s refreshing when a movie isn’t a disappointment, and “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is just as funny as I hoped it would be. This by-the-book comedy spy thriller has a good mix of bloody action and silly antics, making it one of the more fun movies to hit theaters this summer.
Recently dumped Audrey (Mila Kunis) and best friend Morgan (Kate McKinnon) are unexpectedly thrust into an international conspiracy when they learn that Audrey’s ex-boyfriend Drew (Justin Theroux) is a top secret spy. After barely escaping deadly assassins, the duo are given instructions to help save the world. The gal pals embark on a deadly road trip of sorts through Eastern Europe, where they quickly learn to trust no one.
What works so well is the natural chemistry of the two leads. These are funny women who bounce wisecracks off each other with a familiar ease. They’re girlfriends you’ll want to hang out with long after the movie ends. The two support each other in an admirable ride or die way, and they are totally believable as longtime besties.
Most of the humor is very funny, and most of it is aimed at female moviegoers. What a shame more than a few jokes resort to bottom of the barrel type stuff (think poop one-liners). The hijinks are sometimes outrageous, but they never seem overly so if you’ll just sit back and go with the flow. The breezy, casual attitude accompanied by action-packed shootouts and fistfights make this one a goofy, feminist good time.
