“Mr. Nobody Against Putin”

Documentary “Mr. Nobody Against Putin” offers a rare and intimate look at the transformation of a Russian primary school into a war recruitment center during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. At the center of the film is teacher turned whistle blower Pavel “Pasha,” who documents his school’s shift from an institution of education to one of militarization and propaganda.

The film’s appeal lies in its subtle but impactful portrayal of Pasha’s internal conflict. Known for his mischievous, nonconformist personality, Pasha is initially a beloved figure in his town, known for offering a safe space for his students and defying the system. As the war begins and the school is overtaken by patriotic policies, the man’s once lighthearted world is torn apart. His decision to secretly document the growing militarization of the school under the guise of his role as the school’s videographer serves as both an act of defiance and a moral reckoning.

The documentary is as emotionally devastating as it is revealing. The footage of propaganda events and militarized children’s organizations is chilling, and the heart-wrenching moments, such as Pasha filming farewell parties for students being sent to fight in Ukraine, underscore the deeply personal toll of a war that is not just fought on the battlefield but within every institution in Russian society.

The ethical dilemmas Pasha faces as an educator are painfully relatable yet extraordinary in their intensity, especially as he is forced to navigate the delicate balance of being true to his values while still trying to protect his students and his own family from the repressive state.

While the subject matter is profound and gripping, the documentary does run a bit long at times. There are sections that delve deeply into Pasha’s day-to-day life and his feelings of powerlessness. While crucial to understanding his emotional state, these scenes start to feel repetitive. The film would have been stronger with a tighter focus on the escalating tension within the school and Pasha’s desperate attempts to manage both his personal and professional conflicts.

Despite some minor criticisms, “Mr. Nobody Against Putin”  is a moving portrait of courage and resilience in the face of authoritarianism. This story of quiet defiance is a reminder of the importance of using your voice to expose injustices whenever they are unfolding in our world.
