When it comes to nailing its demographic, you can’t get much better than director Jeff Fowler‘s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” a movie that delivers exactly what its target audience of kids and video game fans would expect. Offering a whirlwind of vibrant animation, energetic action, and family-friendly humor, this is a fun, fast-paced adventure for the younger crowd and fans who are nostalgic for the franchise.
For the rest of us, the film feels like more of the same, with its predictable plot and heavy reliance on cartoonish antics. In this sequel, Sonic (voice of Ben Schwartz), Knuckles (voice of Idris Elba), and Tails (voice of Colleen O’Shaughnessey) reunite against a powerful new adversary, the mysterious villain Shadow (voice of Keanu Reeves). With their abilities outmatched by a bad guy who possesses powers unlike anything they have faced before, the newly formed Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance with goofy scoundrel Dr. Robotnik (the scene-stealing Jim Carrey).
With a strong emphasis on teamwork and heartwarming family themes, it’s hard not to be won over by the film’s many charms. The animation is undeniably strong, with the characters looking better than ever and the action scenes zipping along with a smoothly polished feel. The world of Sonic pops with color, and the slapstick violence is as cartoonish as ever (making it perfect for children who will find every pratfall and explosion delightfully amusing).
What makes the movie so insanely watchable is Carrey. His portrayal of a super-silly super villain is a true standout, and he could be considered one of the best casting decisions in recent memory. Carrey’s over-the-top, goofy antics perfectly match the cartoonish tone of the film, providing much-needed energy and laughter. He fully embraces the role, bringing a larger-than-life quality that elevates every scene he’s in – even when the movie otherwise feels like it’s for a younger crowd.
There are moments when the movie tries to convey some deeper messages about redemption, but they’re overshadowed by the rest of the noise. This is still a film with positive role models and commendable themes of teamwork, making good choices, and the importance of family.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 3“ is fun for what it is, and it’s perfect for kids and fans of the franchise. The animation is great, Carrey is a total joy, and the story is thematically solid.
